There is nothing more exciting as a traveller when you find something completely different. Usually, it takes quite a bit of travelling for you to start feeling that every place looks the same but if that is the case then you have never been to Budapest.

As the capital city of Hungary, this city has been through much turmoil and change over the past few decades. As a prior state of the USSR, the country has worked its way back from the Cold War isolation to be a bastion of democracy in Europe.

The remnants of communist influence are prevalent in the architecture in the main areas of the city, but most of Budapest remains truly Hungarian. A very important part of the Hungarian culture revolves around food. Citizens of Budapest do not take this for granted and most festivals will have their own infusion of culinary brilliance to help with the celebrations.

Old Budapest is situated on the banks of the Danube River and the city has grown immensely over the centuries. If it is culture that you are looking for then the city life itself will give you more than any museum or gallery. This said, there are more than enough museums and galleries for you to gather 'official' information. However, you will gain so much more just by mixing with the locals.

Due to western influence since the turn of the century, the nightlife has become somewhat more mainstream. If you find yourself staying in a hotel close to the city's hub then you will notice that many of the pubs are themed according to other countries influences: Irish, American and Italian predominantly.

If you are looking at really immersing yourself in the night culture that Budapest has to offer then staying in a hotel may be your best option. The hotel staff should be able to show you the best places to go and will also arrange for taxis or shuttles to ensure that you get back to your hotel safely and without getting lost. The streets of Budapest can be very confusing at the best of times.

If, however, you prefer the freedom of a self-catering apartment then you should think of hiring a car. The taxi services and public transport is decent, but if it is freedom of movement you want then a car would not be a bad option. You do not need an expensive rental car to get you around. One thing that you have to keep in mind is drinking and driving. The police are extremely vigilant in Budapest and do not take kindly to people breaking the law. You should also carry your passport on you at all times. This is just in case you need to show ID.

The best time to go to Budapest is in the summer months because winters tend to be quite cold. If you are looking for a white Christmas then winter in Budapest may suit you.
