Some movies just naturally stick out in our memory where we can remember the stars that played in them and can vividly recall certain scenes in the show like it was yesterday when we saw it for the first time. Sometimes these movies will go on to become much loved classics by almost everyone and then there are those that might not have been so much critically acclaimed, but were of a subject matter that made them different enough to not be forgotten. One movie such as this was Waterworld.
Waterworld was released in 1995 and starred Kevin Costner. The movie story line is all about the earth after the polar ice caps have melted and all previous landmasses covered with water. Kevin Costner who plays the part of the Mariner, roams the seas just trying to survive, but there are myths about his abilities that others are curious about. These others live in floating settlements that are haphazardly put together. Fresh water is like gold and dirt or sand from the sea bottom is just as treasured.
The Smokers are the bad guys in this picture and they want anything of value they can get
their hands on. One thing especially is part of a map that leads to a place where legend has it should be some dry land. The problem is that part of the map is tattooed on a little girl. Costner and the female guardian of the little girl end up stuck together on his watercraft with the child and must protect her from the Smokers.
Needless to say all ends well in this futuristic water version of Mad Max. The good guys get the map and everyone discovers the truth about the Mariner is that he has developed fish like feet and gills which came in really handy. He takes them to the land that was indeed real, but he chooses not to stay.
Whether you loved the movie or thought it mediocre, you have to admit that it would be a real adventure to live in a world where water ruled and land was a myth. It makes you wonder if it actually could come down to that if the polar ice caps do completely melt away and they are at an alarming rate. The fact is that a vast majority of our earth could indeed be covered with water leaving us little dry land to fight over. How our lives would be changed and could they end up closely resembling that of those fictional characters in this movie?
