In the country of Slovenia you will find a charmingly small town by the name of Bled. This lovely little town is located on the east side of the Lake Bled. The lake and the town can be found in the Upper Carniola region of northwestern Slovenia. The area where the town is situated is within the Julian Alps which in itself, is a popular tourist destination. This beautiful town has been in existence from the Mesolithic times itself.
During the course of history the town of Bled has come under the rule of many different rulers and countries. Today it is an independent municipality in Slovenia. This charming town offers its visitors with many wonderful activities, places of interest to see and some cultural sights which will linger in your minds once you return home. As this town is small many visitors find sightseeing here to be quite enjoyable and they can use this town as either a base to explore the rest of the countryside or as the starting point for a thrilling adventure around the country of Slovenia.
While you are in Bled you may enjoy walking around the town to see the beautiful buildings, shops, restaurants and other sights. As the town is not that large, you should be able to cover the town in about an hour. Before you start your sightseeing in the town you may enjoy a trip to Bled Island located in the middle of the lake. This island can be reached by pletna – this is a traditional wooden row barge – which will take you to the island. Once you are on the island you might like to look at the church on the island. This church which was built in the 17th century has been built over the remains of a former 10th century church.
From the landing dock you will see a flight of 99 steps that leads up to the church. There is a local tradition among the people of the island and that of the town of Bled that a newly married groom should carry his bride up these 99 steps. During the climb the bride must remain silent. Once they have carried out their roles – he to carry her all the way up and she to remain silent – it is said that they will have a happy and enduring marriage. While you may enjoy seeing this sight if you are lucky there are other things you can see while you are on the island. One such sight is that of the clock tower. You will find lots of beautiful rooms, furniture and there is even a small museum which depicts life in the castle during its heydays.
One unusual aspect to visiting this castle in Bled is that you can learn the art of Sabrage or Sabree which is the art of cutting the top off a wine bottle with a blade in the castle’s wine cellar. You will be able to bottle, label and place a wax stamp on your very own wine bottle while you take these lessons with the monk who is in charge. Above the wine cellar in the courtyard you will find some wooden steps which will lead you to a store selling aromatic oils and herbs. These are just a few of the interesting things that you will find when you visit the town of Bled.
