We are less than a month away from what could be Miley Cyrus’ next leap into stardom. Disney has paired Cyrus up with Nicholas Sparks’ next big movie, The Last Song. Is it time to finally say goodbye to Hannah Montana?

Cyrus has built an identity that many think she can’t leave. She is now a leading role model for many young girls and children. This image was created because she’s spent the last five years playing as Miley Stewart in Disney’s Hannah Montana television series. Since 2006, the series has spanned three seasons and Cyrus is now finishing the forth and final one. She has successfully targeted a younger audience of fans with her role in this series. However, Cyrus is ready to move on, grow up, and target a new audience. The question is whether or not her current fans are ready to grow with her. Disney believes that these fans will follow Cyrus and plans to monetize on them through her next movie, The Last Song.

The Last Song is based on one of Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling novels. Nicholas Sparks is previous known for his other romance novels including The Notebook and Dear John. The Notebook was considered a best-seller for over a year in the romance novel industry and its movie grossed over $100 million at the box office. Similarly, Dear John is rapidly growing popularity and Disney has produced a movie surrounding the nov
el, which is presently being played in theatres. This movie has already grossed about $75 million and does not show any signs of slowing down. The Last Song is set to hit theatres March 31, 2010 and it is unquestionable that it will be just as popular, if not more, than Sparks’ previous writings.

With a guaranteed success about to hit the box-office, it would only make sense for Disney to use it as a bridge to expand Cyrus beyond her younger audience. She will be linked into the romance industry. Not only that, but the hope is to introduce her younger audience to the same industry. These younger girls are on the verge of their high school lives. High school brings a life of romance, intimacy, and relationships for all girls around. These girls will likely watch The Last Song through following Miley Cyrus. In return, The Last Song will likely create dreams and visions among these girls to link them into their high school culture.

As the young girl segment of our population continues to age, their vision of life will change to boys, romance, and love. Not only that, their vision of Miley Cyrus will change. Cyrus won’t simply be that childhood role model, or media icon, guiding young girls throughout her life. Now, she’ll be a romance idol, known as that passionate girl who fell in love in the The Last Song. The original question was if Cyrus was ready to grow up... but that’s the wrong question. The right question is... are Cyrus’ fans ready to grow up?
