Delphi Greece. From Ancient Times to the Present

To know Delphi, Greece is to become familiar with its rich enigmatic history. Delphi , which is a city located in central Greece, is famous for its mysterious mythological stories that surround the shrine of Apollo. According to legend Apollo killed Python and buried him in the “navel” of the world also known as Omphalos. A shrine to Apollo was built there and this is where the Delphic Oracle was located and many people come there to consult the oracle. Omphalos is not the only attraction in Delphi Greece, there are a multitude of interesting things to see and do.
WEATHER IN DELPHI GREECE
Delphi is a city that is usually mild and Mediterranean like weather. There is very little rain in the summer. In the winter it is cold and because there are mountains in Delphi there is often snow. The temperature can reach as high as 34°C in the summer and as low as 12°C in the winter.

Temple of Apollo
The Temple of Apollo has had its share of destruction and reconstruction. This structure is located in the slopes of the Parnassos Mountains and was rebuilt three times. It was first built in 7th century B.C. by two architects named Trophonios and Agamedes. A fire destroyed the temple in the 6th century B.C. It was rebuilt and renamed the "Temple of Alcmeonidae" in honor of the family who financed the resurgence of the structure. Finally, In 373 B.C. an earthquake destroyed the temple and it was rebuilt again in 330 B.C. Today it remains in ruins with the statue of Apollo at the center.
Omphalos
Travelers can experience the “Naval of the World”. Visitors are able to rub the famous stone where the oracle was located.
Castalian Spring
This is a sacred gorge where many pilgrims came to bathe before a special event. It is considered sacred because this is where Apollo slaughtered Python. Today visitors cannot go in this area to utilize the waters, but there is small fountain that was created to accommodate visitors.
Delphi Museum
The museum contains many of the ancient artifacts that were found in early Delphi Greece. It was built in 1903 by a French Architect named Albert Tournaire.
Sikelianos Museum
This museum is the former home of the poets, Angelos and Eva Sikelianos. This is where their work is honored and featured. There are a variety of costumes and masks from Greek dramas that were designed by the Sikelianos.
Mt. Parnassos
This mountain is located in central Greece. It overlooks Delphi and when the traveler mounts this structure, beautiful views of olive groves and the countryside can be seen.
