We want to bet on whom and what and where because we are just so intrigued by these real life happenings.

So, really it isn't that betting has changed all that much, it is that the people betting might have expanded in scope.
We aren't all sports minded people (no kidding) and we aren't all financial whizzes who can predict (or think we can predict) what the markets are going to do.
